With small children it can become a challenge to teach them about the importance of our actions and the effect that it will have. But kids are really smart and we constantly underestimate them. By leading by example they catch up on our beliefs and way of life.
So from my experience I’ll share what has worked with mine and maybe it can work with yours too.
1. Talk to them
You as a parent are their role model, and no matter what their age is, it is so important to make them feel part of the process in every aspect. So try explaining to them why it is that you’re doing what you’re doing. They will give you their opinions or thoughts and it can give you ideas onto how better to introduce a more sustainable way of living with their help.
2. Show them the magic of recycling
Kids faces light up when they understand that you can turn something old into something new!
3.Take them to second hand shops and/or markets
Show them that someone else’s garbage is someone else’s gold.
4.Substitute some bathroom essentials into more eco friendly ones
The younger they are the easier it will be with this one. My kids loved their bamboo toothbrushes and their solid bar shampoos
5. Make simple DIY’s as a family
Try picking a simple DIY recipe you as a family can make from scratch, not only will we bond, but your are teaching them how self suficiency works!
I hope these tips will inspire you to start teaching your kids today about the importance of the waste we generate.
If you have any ideas or experiences you would like to share please leave a comment, I would love to hear something new.
